Tablet/Smartphone: What should I do when “Memory usage is increasing.” displays?

This message displays when memory usage exceeds a certain level.

If this message displays, please try the following workarounds.

1. Clear memory and change the app settings
2. Reduce canvas size and adjust layers

Note: Switch to Studio Mode for some operations.

Updated contents of Ver. 2.3.0

Starting with Ver. 2.3.0, released on December 5, 2023, the method of obtaining the memory usage displayed in the Information palette has been improved so that more accurate values are displayed.

This may cause messages to appear for some operations that did not appear in the previous version.

Actual memory usage is unchanged from previous versions.

If the operation is stable after the warning message appears, you may continue drawing or editing.

If a warning message appears and stable operation is not possible, take the measures described on this page.

Preparation

1. Save and then close any open canvas.

Note:For multiple open canvases, save each one and then close them.

2. Close all apps except for Clip Studio Paint.

Note:
・Memory usage varies depending on the work data being edited.
・Please see here for the required specs for the device using the app.

1. Clear memory and change the app settings

Clear History

SelectClear Memory > History from the Edit menu to clear history.

Note: History will be cleared for all canvases.

Lower the memory usage in Allocate to application (iPhone/iPad)

Under Preferences > Performance, lower the number found in Allocate to application by 20% and then tap OK.

Note: If the message still displays frequently after changing the settings, then lower the number by another 20%.

Reduce Undo levels

Under Preferences > Performance, lower the number under Undo levels and then tap OK.

Restart the app and device

Restart the app and your device.

2. Reduce canvas size and adjust layers

Memory usage can be lowered by reducing the canvas size and adjusting the layers.

Reduce the canvas size

Memory usage can be lowered by reducing the canvas size and resolution.

Make canvas settings according to your project, such as for web/social media or printing.

Please check the following chart for the recommended canvas size and resolution settings.

ProjectCanvas sizeResolution
Illustrations for web/social media1000px ~ 2000px per side72dpi
For printingActual sizes for postcards and manuscript paper・Color manuscripts: 350dpi
・Monochrome manuscripts: 600dpi~1200dpi

Note:
Having one side of the canvas be over 3000px and a resolution of over 72dpi for illustrations for web/social media will create a large canvas and increase memory usage.

Creating a new canvas

When creating a new canvas, use the presets for illustrations, such as 4:3, Square, Postcard, etc.

Scroll to left to see all the presets.

Changing canvas size afterwards

You can change the canvas size afterwards with Change Canvas Size.

After performing Change Canvas Size, delete unnecessary data with Delete Outside Selection.

1. Set the size of the canvas from Edit > Change Canvas Size.

2. Choose Select > Select All.

3. Select Edit > Delete Outside Selection.

Changing resolution afterwards

You can change the resolution afterwards with Edit > Change Image Resolution.

Note: This operation increases memory usage, so please only conduct it with only one open canvas.

Adjust layers

Memory usage can be reduced by merging layers, reducing the number of layers, and rasterizing.

・Merge finished layers

・Rasterize 3D layers that no longer need editing

・After converting 3D material to lines and tones, delete the original 3D layer, etc.

How to check memory usage

You can check the memory usage (workload) in the Information palette.

1. System

Displays memory usage for the whole system.

It is the ratio of the amount of memory used by all applications versus the amount of memory on the device currently in use. When System is close to 100%, the performance decreases. Closing other apps that are running may reduce the system’s memory usage.

2. Application

Displays memory usage for the app.

Indicates the "amount of memory currently used by CLIP STUDIO PAINT" versus the "amount of memory available to CLIP STUDIO PAINT”.

When it gets close to 100%, the performance decreases. Performing the workarounds listed in this page may improve performance.

How to display the Information palette on smartphone

1. Tap > App Settings > Palette Bar Settings.

2. Check Information, and then select OK.

3. Tap the icon in the palette bar to display it.

If the message “Storage space is low” is displayed

If this message is displayed, it means that your device’s storage capacity is running low, not the memory.

Delete unnecessary work files and pictures and free up your storage space.

Note:
Storage is where apps and data are permanently stored. Data such as work files and pictures, videos, music, etc. are saved in storage.

How to set the display of warning messages

You can control the display settings for warning messages in Preferences.

Note:
You can set the warning messages to not display; however, this does not mean that actual memory usage will decrease.

1. Open Preferences.

2. Set Warn about memory usage under Performance, and then tap OK.
