What is Save in compatibility mode?

When saving .clip files, you can Save in compatibility mode so that your projects have better compatibility between different versions of Clip Studio Paint.

If a file is saved in compatibility mode, even if it contains data that is not usable in older versions, it will not become read-only and can be edited.

Note
・Only some layers are locked, not the entire canvas.
・The file size and the time it takes to save the file may increase significantly.

How to Save in compatibility mode

If you are using Clip Studio Paint on tablet or smartphone, please switch to Studio Mode first.

1. Open the file you want to edit with an older version in a newer version of Clip Studio Paint.

Example: When exchanging files between Ver. 3 and Ver. 4 of Clip Studio Paint, open the file you want to edit with Ver. 3 in Ver. 4.

2. Open Preferences.

3. Select File.

4. Under Compatibility mode, tap Save or Ask when saving then tap OK.

  • Save: Embeds version compatibility information into the clip file when saved under a different name.
  • Ask when saving: When saving as another name, a dialog shows asking if you want to embed the version compatibility information into the clip file.

5. Tap File menu Save as.

Note: The Save option does not apply version compatibility information to the file.

Note

If you selected Ask when saving in step 4, check the Save in compatibility mode checkbox in the dialog that appears, and then tap OK.

Once saved, the file can be opened in older versions of Clip Studio Paint.

For clip files with Ver. 1.5 compatible 3D layers

If you save clip files with Ver. 1.5 compatible 3D layers, the entire canvas will not be locked when opened on a tablet, smartphone, or Chromebook, and the layers will be editable.

Note
・Only the old 3D layer is locked.
・This service is available for tablets, smartphones, and Chromebooks using Clip Studio Paint Ver. 1.13.0 or later.

If the feature doesn't display

This feature is limited to Ver. 1.13.0 or later.

Please update to a version after Ver. 1.13.0.
