macOS: A delay occurs when drawing

If you experience delays when drawing, please try the following in order from the top.

  • Close other applications
  • Uninstall the pen tablet driver
  • Reinstall the latest version of the driver

If the problem persists after trying all of the above, take the following measures according to your issue.

The entire stroke delays

If the entire stroke is delayed, please check the following:

Canvas size

Select File menu > New and create a 800px x 600px canvas with 72dpi to check if the delay still occurs.

If the delay does not occur on the newly created canvas, then the delay may be due to having a large canvas size on the file you were working on.

From the Edit menu, check the canvas size from Change Image Resolution and change it as required.

Note:
If the canvas size exceeds 10,000 px on one side, it may affect drawing performance.
If the unit is set to mm, check that the size is not too large.
Example: A normal-sized manga manuscript is B4 size (220mm×310mm).

Sub Tool in use

Check if a specific brush delays or if all brushes delay.

If a specific brush delays, return the brush to default settings and confirm if it still delays.

Note:
For watercolor and decoration brushes, drawing speed slows down when the brush size is large.

Preferences in Clip Studio Paint

1. Select Preferences in the CLIP STUDIO PAINT menu.

2. Select tablet on the left side of the screen shown.

3. Set the following:

Priority = "1"

Precision = Recommended

4. Close Clip Studio Paint.

If the above settings do not improve the issue, please try the following in order.

  • Set Priority between 2 - 5 and check for the delay.

If there is a delay or it does not feel right, please check the operation with the following settings.

  • Change Precision to Prefer speed
  • Set Priority between 1 - 5

OS version

A cursor delay occurred in macOS 14, but has been fixed in macOS 14.5.

Update to macOS 14.5 or later and check if the issue improves.

The delay occurs at the end of the stroke when lifting the pen from the tablet

Please check the value set in undo levels.

1. Open Clip Studio Paint menu > Preferences.

2. Under Performance, set the value of Undo levels to a lower value.

If the problem persists even after changing the value, set Undo interval between actions to 0.

Undo levels
Increasing the Undo levels value means more memory will be used, increasing the likelihood that the app may lag or force quit.

Timing delays at regular intervals

If the drawing delay occurs at a regular interval, it may be due to the installed software or drivers.

Please check the following.

Drivers installed on the PC

If an Xbox game controller driver in installed, drawing will be delayed.

Check drawing operation after uninstalling the applicable driver.
